How to improve TOEFL Writing
Three tasks, 23 minutes. Two of them are marked on a submission, and those are the two worth practising properly.
The 2026 Writing section has three tasks: Build a Sentence, about 10 word-ordering items in roughly 6 minutes; Write an Email, 7 minutes, where covering every bullet in the prompt matters more than length; and Write for an Academic Discussion, about 10 minutes, where you take a position and support it. The independent essay is gone, so the skill to train is completeness against a specific prompt rather than essay length.

About ten items in roughly six minutes. It is the one Writing task with a right answer, which makes it the easiest to improve alone: work it until word order stops being something you reason about.
Write an Email: cover every bullet
Seven minutes, and official samples run to about 150 words. The bullets in the prompt are the marking scheme in plain sight — an email that reads beautifully and answers two of three bullets scores below one that is plainer and answers all three.
- Count the bullets before you writeTwo or three, usually. That count is how many things the response must contain, and it takes ten seconds to check.
- Give each bullet its own sentence or twoNot a paragraph each. Coverage is what is being checked, not development.
- Match the register to who it is addressed toA message to a professor and one to a housemate are not the same email, and the prompt always says which.
- Spend the last minute re-reading the prompt, not the emailThe failure mode is a missing bullet, and you cannot see a missing bullet by reading what you wrote.
Academic Discussion: a position, then support
About ten minutes. The minimum is 100 words and official samples run near 200, so length is not the problem to solve — the problem is saying something specific enough to support. You are contributing to a discussion where other views are already on the screen, so a response that ignores them reads as not having listened.
- Take an actual position in the first sentence. "There are arguments on both sides" is a sentence that costs you time and says nothing.
- Engage with what is already there. Agreeing with one contributor and extending them is a real move; so is disagreeing with a reason.
- One developed reason beats three listed ones. At 200 words, three reasons means none of them is supported.
- Specific beats general, every time. A concrete instance is what makes a position look considered.
The two you cannot mark yourself
Build a Sentence has a key. The email and the discussion response do not — they are submissions, judged against band descriptors, and that is precisely why most self-study skips them. Written responses submitted here come back graded against those descriptors, so the two tasks that carry most of the section stop being the ones you never check.

What not to practise
- Independent essay templates. There is no independent essay in the 2026 test. A five-paragraph structure has nowhere to go.

- Writing to a word count. The email is about coverage and the discussion has a floor, not a target. Padding to reach a number is visible in the writing.
