TOEFL Listening: what the 2026 section asks
Shorter audio, more of it, and one task type that gives you a single line to react to. Note-taking strategy built for long lectures no longer fits.
The 2026 TOEFL Listening section runs about 29 minutes with roughly 47 questions and is stage-adaptive. It has four task types: Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement and Listen to an Academic Talk. The long four-to-six-minute lectures of the retired format are gone.
The four task types

What changes about note-taking
Old advice — take structured notes through a long lecture — was built for four-to-six-minute audio. With short clips, heavy note-taking costs you the next sentence. For Listen and Choose a Response, write nothing: the whole item is one line, and the answer depends on hearing what the line is *doing*.
- Listen and Choose: no notes. Decide what kind of utterance you just heard, then pick the reply that responds to it rather than the one that reuses its words.
- Conversation: note only the problem and any number or date. The questions come back to those.
- Announcement: note what changes — a room, a time, a requirement. Announcements exist to change something.
- Academic Talk: note the claim, then each piece of support. Two or three words each.
A large share of Listen and Choose errors are not about hearing the words — they are about not recognising a polite refusal, an indirect request or a set phrase. That is a vocabulary problem in an audio disguise.
