How TOEFL scoring works on the 1–6 band scale
Averaging changes the strategy. Here is what each band means, what the average does to an uneven profile, and how quickly scores arrive.
Each TOEFL section is scored from 1.0 to 6.0 in half-band steps, and the total is the average of the four section bands rounded to the nearest half band — not the sum. ETS gives the two rounding cases directly: an average of 5.125 scores 5, and an average of 5.25 scores 5.5. Band 6 aligns to CEFR C2, bands 5–5.5 to C1, 4–4.5 to B2, 3–3.5 to B1, 2–2.5 to A2 and 1–1.5 to A1.

Why the average changes your strategy
Under the retired scale, sections were summed, so a spike could carry a weakness. On the 2026 scale the total is an average, and averages punish unevenness. Two candidates with the same summed strength do not get the same total any more.

The practical rule: fix your worst section first. A half band gained where you are weakest is worth exactly as much as a half band gained where you are strong, and it is almost always cheaper to win.
When your scores arrive
- Electronic scores land in about 72 hours after the test.
- The PDF score report follows roughly a day after that.
- Reports issued through the 2026–2028 transition show CEFR, the 1–6 band and a 0–120 conversion together.
- Scores stay valid for two years from the test date.
What a realistic target looks like
Most published undergraduate requirements that have been restated on the new scale sit around band 4.5–5.0; competitive and postgraduate programmes tend to ask for 5.0 and up.
