TOEFL Speaking: the two 2026 tasks
No source material to synthesise, no 15-second prep card. What is left rewards hearing accurately and starting to speak without hesitating.
The 2026 TOEFL Speaking section runs about 8 minutes and has two task types: Listen and Repeat (about seven sentences, each heard once and repeated in full) and Take an Interview (about four questions on a single topic, roughly 45 seconds each). The integrated speaking tasks that required reading and listening first were removed.

Listen and Repeat: it is a listening task with your mouth
You hear each sentence once. Most lost marks are not pronunciation — they are dropped function words: articles, auxiliaries, plural endings. The longer sentences at the end are where a working memory strategy pays.
- Repeat the whole sentence, including small words. A fluent partial repeat scores worse than a plainer complete one.
- Do not correct yourself mid-sentence. Finish, then stop.
- Practise the long sentences specifically — short ones give a false sense of readiness.
Take an Interview: start speaking within two seconds
Roughly 45 seconds per question is generous for content and unforgiving for hesitation. Silence itself is not penalised — but filling the silence with *uh*, *you know* or a repeated word is exactly what reads as disfluent.
- Pick a side immediatelyEven on a question you have no opinion about. "Both are fine" burns ten seconds and gives the rater nothing.
- Give one reason, then one exampleThat structure fills 45 seconds naturally without you having to plan a shape.
- Stop when you are doneTrailing off into filler after your point is made costs more than ending a few seconds early.
