Is the TOEFL hard?
Shorter is not the same as easier. Three specific features of the 2026 format make it unforgiving in ways the old test was not.
The 2026 TOEFL is shorter than the test it replaced — about 90 minutes instead of roughly three hours — but not straightforwardly easier. Averaging the four section bands punishes an uneven profile, the stage-adaptive branch in Reading and Listening puts a ceiling on a weak start, and there is no mid-test break to recover in.
What got easier
- It is half the length. About 90 minutes rather than roughly three hours.
- Reading passages are short. Roughly 200–280 words for the academic passage, not 700.
- Speaking dropped the integrated tasks. No reading and listening to synthesise before you speak.
- Writing dropped the long essay. Three short, well-defined tasks instead.
- Scores arrive in about 72 hours rather than four to eight days.
What got harder
- The total is an average. One weak section drags everything down proportionally — there is no summing your way past it.
- There is no break. Ninety continuous minutes, with Speaking last, when you are most tired.
- The adaptive branch has a ceiling. A shaky Reading or Listening stage one routes you into an easier stage two that cannot produce a top band, however well you then do.
- Everything is faster. Roughly 35 seconds a question in Reading, 7 minutes for the whole email, about 45 seconds per interview answer.
- Complete the Words demands production. You supply the word from context; recognising it is not enough.
Who finds it hardest
In practice, the people who struggle most are not the ones with the weakest English — they are the ones with the most uneven English, and the ones who prepared on pre-2026 material. Strong readers with weak speaking used to be carried by the sum; on an averaged scale they are not.
Format surprise. Knowing that Writing comes third, that there is no break, and that stage one sets your ceiling costs one afternoon to learn and is worth real marks on test day.
