Planning

A TOEFL study plan for the 2026 test

Not a 12-week calendar you will abandon in week three — four habits, sized to your runway, with the weakest section getting the biggest share.

In short

A workable TOEFL plan has four moving parts: daily task-type practice with the explanation read on every question, a short daily vocabulary production drill, one full 90-minute mock a week, and a session clearing the mistakes that mock produced. Because the total is an average of four bands, the plan should always weight the weakest section most heavily.

Week one: find out where you are

  1. Learn the 2026 format firstIf your material predates January 2026, half of what you know is about a test that no longer exists. One hour on what changed is worth more than a week of misdirected practice.
  2. Take one full mockNinety minutes, all four sections, no break. The number will be rough; the profile is what you need.
  3. Rank your four sectionsThe weakest one gets the largest share of every week from here.

The last two weeks

  • Rehearse the whole 90 minutes at least twice more. Stamina is a real variable when there is no break.
  • Drill Build a Sentence and Complete the Words daily. They are mechanical, fast to improve, and easy to leave on the table.
  • Stop starting new material. In the final fortnight, the mistake bank is worth more than anything new.
  • Practise opening strong. Reading and Listening branch on stage one — arrive already warm.
If your runway is short

With under three weeks, drop everything except format familiarity, daily Build a Sentence and Complete the Words, and two full mocks. Trying to raise every section at once in three weeks raises none of them.

Frequently asked questions

What should a TOEFL study plan include?

Daily task-type practice with explanations read, a short daily vocabulary production drill, a weekly full mock in one sitting, and a session afterwards clearing the mistakes it produced — weighted toward whichever section is weakest.

How do I know which section to focus on?

Take a full mock in your first week. Because the total is the average of four bands, the weakest section is where a half band is cheapest to win.

Do I need to study every day?

For vocabulary, yes — production depends on regular retrieval, so ten minutes daily beats an hour weekly. Task-type practice tolerates a rest day.
